Montana district
is situated in the central part of northwest Bulgaria. It reaches
the Danube to the North, where the border with Romania passes. In
southwest touches Serbia. Its surface is 3 635sq.km. The history of
Montana district dates back to ancient times. During the antiquity
the region was populated by the Thracian tribe “Tribali”. Once it
becomes part of the Eastern Roman Empire the settlements of
“Montanenzium”/Montana/, “Almus” /Lom/ and “Medeke” /Varshetz/
emerge. Later on the Slav tribes arrive and then the Bulgarians.
